Technology Augmenting Social Studies
This page will provide a summary of the activities that incorporate the use of technology within a theoretical social studies class, to include:
A generalization of the types of activities students will take part in
A brief description of what will happen during those activities
What will be expected of students and how they will be graded
These activities are strictly theoretical and based on the theoretical use of emerging / advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR)
Learning Cursive
- As part of the class, students will be taught how to write and, in doing so, read cursive.
- Students will be provided an initial introduction where they will be taught the basics of how to write cursive letters. They will also be provided a workbook containing simple writing activities. At the start of class, each day, students will be given 3 to 5 minutes to journal in cursive. There will be an activity where the students interact with an AI Thomas Jefferson. He will instruct them on how to write cursive while aiding the teacher in a history lecture on the declaration of independence.
- Students are expected to participate in daily journaling which will be graded solely on participation.
- Small writing assignments will be given to the students as time progresses throughout the course. An example would be writing the preamble to the declaration of independence in cursive. Quality of penmanship and a grammatically accurate / correct document will determine the grade.
VR and Historical Events / Places
- Students will participate in AI driven, VR tours of historical events and places. This is meant to augment lectures, making them more interactive. Not replace them.
- Lectures will be followed by use of VR driven AI guided tours of historical moments as a visual and immersive addition to provided lectures where students will get to ask questions and debate with AI controlled historical characters, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and George Washington.
- These VR guided events are meant to be tied into lectures provided by the teacher and are not individual graded events. Quizzes and academic exams will evaluate students in general throughout the course.
Research Papers
- Throughout the course of the class, students will be expected to write small research papers based on in class lectures.
- These small research papers will be no longer then 1 or 2 pages, double-spaced. These are individual research projects that will be conducted at the end of each lecture topic.
- Research papers will be graded on historical accuracy, relevancy to associated lectures, grammar, and effort put into research. Papers will be scanned for level of AI use. Higher levels of AI use will hinder the student’s grade.
- AI is provided in class for aid in tutoring and providing academic guidance. AI should not be used to do work for the student.
Simple Research Projects
- Periodically throughout the course, students will be expected to carry out small group research projects that will consist of a power point and in class presentation.
- As the class concludes a period of history the students will be broken down into small groups of randomly assigned individuals. Students will collaborate to select a topic associated with the period of history recently covered.
- Grades will be provided to a project. All students associated with that project will be given the grade that the project receives. Projects will be graded based on quality of the power point presentation, historical accuracy, relevancy to the lectures provided in class, and the quality of how well the students present the material.
- The class final will be a small group research project of greater length and complexity. Groups will be larger to help offset the increased workload.
